Angola, Cuba appreciate relations of sisterhood and cooperation
Luanda, November 16, 2020.- Cuban and Angolan representatives addressed on Monday the historic ties of sisterhood and cooperation on the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both States. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the exchange took place via a videoconference, the summary of which was in charge of Ambassador Esther Armenteros, who distinguished the common roots since colonial times and the early formalization of diplomatic ties, just four days after the proclamation of the independence of Angola, on November 15, 1975.
According to the Secretary of State for Foreign Relations Esmeralda Mendonça, Cuba is the nation that has contributed most to the training of Angolan leaders.
The two countries, she noted, 'were together in the fight for the independence, freedom, development and social progress in Southern Africa, and together we can continue to build a better future.'
After 45 years, relations 'are increasingly solid' and our wish is that cooperation be 'dynamic, fruitful and mutually advantageous,' especially in the current scenario of international economic crisis worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Fernando Gonzalez, recalled Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro by quoting him, 'The empire could not achieve its purposes of dismembering Angola and hiding its independence. The heroic and long struggle of the peoples of Angola and Cuba stopped it.'
