Delegation from US’s League of Women Voters Visit Cuba

CUBA, February 25th, 2011.- A delegation from the South Florida League of Women Voters (LWV) headed by its president, Deirdre Macnab, met on Thursday in Havana with the president of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP), Kenia Serrano, in Havana.

Serrano welcomed the group that is visiting Cuba as part of the LWV’s initiative “Know Your Neighbors” and praised their decision to know at first hand about Cuba’s reality and to share experiences with the people of the Caribbean nation.

She explained that women’s integration into society is one of the most important achievements of the Revolution and she highlighted the large presence of women in the Cuban Parliament and ahead of ministries and important national institutions.

During the meeting, the visitors received information on the current process to upgrade the Cuban economic model and on the limitations resulting from the almost 50-year-old US financial, economic and trade blockade of Cuba.

Deirdre Macnab said that their visit aims at encouraging mutual understanding and learning.

After the screening of an audiovisual material on US actor Danny Glover’s visit to Gerardo Hernandez —one of five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998—, most of the visitors said they had never heard of their case before, thus showing the silence the mainstream media keeps on this issue.

The LWV delegation —created in 1920— will hold meetings with representatives of the Cuban Women’s Federation and the National Center of Sexual Education. They will also visit schools and health centers. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
