Cuba denounces to the UN Security Council violations of Israel in Palestine, even in the midst of the pandemic
New York, 21 July 2020. The United Nations Security Council virtually discussed on wednesday the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.
In a speech submitted to the Council, Cuba denounced the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territory by Israel, its annexation policies, the increase of illegal and colonizing practices and measures, including the construction and expansion of settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, the punitive demolitions, the seizure of resources from Palestinian institutions, the forced displacement of hundreds of civilians and the blockade of the Gaza Strip, all in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which aggravate the emergency situation of the public health system and the socioeconomic and humanitarian situation of Palestine, particularly in East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, making it difficult to counter the spreading of the disease.
The Island, which reiterated its profound concern about the impact of the pandemic on Middle East countries, called upon to avoid any action that might lead to a further deterioration of stability and security in that region.
In the document submitted to the Council, the Caribbean country reiterated its concern that in the last period no measures have been taken to end the Israeli military aggression and occupation of the Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, according to resolution 2334 (2016), adopted by the body itself. In addition, it stated that the Council remains silent while Israel, with impunity, consolidates its expansion policy of illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory and threatens to annex the Palestinian territories of the Jordan Valley and other parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The statement also refers to the aggressive, unilateral and unjustified actions of the United States in the Middle East, which severely undermine the legitimate interests of the Arab and Islamic nations and lead to a dangerous escalation in the region, and are mostly flagrant violations of the United Nations Charter, international law and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council. They range from the withdrawal of the financial support to the Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East; the so-called “Deal of the Century”, drawn up by Washington, which ignores the two-State solution; the unilateral action of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and establishing its diplomatic representation in that city, disregarding its historic status; as well as the decision to acknowledge Israel’s sovereignty over the Syrian Golan.
Cuba has fully supported a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which allows the Palestinian people to exercise the right to self-determination and establish an independent and sovereign State in the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and guarantees the refugees´ right to return.
Likewise, it has expressed its unwavering solidarity to the Palestinian government and people and the support to Palestine´s admission as a full member of the United Nations.
